Did you know that there is only a small window of time when saving a tooth is possible? It’s true! So, if you knock out a tooth, it’s crucial that you act fast. Below, you will find a step-by-step guide on how to handle this dental emergency.
Step #1: Call an Emergency Dentist
The first step we recommend taking is calling an emergency dentist. There are two reasons for this. The first is that it increases the chances of them being able to provide the necessary care within the hour. The second is that a helpful member of their team can provide you with instructions on how to handle this dental emergency over the phone!
Step #2: Locate the Tooth
The second step is equally as important: locating the tooth. If you aren’t able to find it, that’s okay – focus on getting to your dentist’s office. If you are able to find it, then pick it up by the crown (the chewing surface) to protect the root surface cells. If there is dirt or other debris on the surface, then rinse the tooth gently with clean water as well.
Step #3: Put the Tooth Back In Its Socket (If Possible)
Preserving the root surface cells of the tooth is essential. One of the best ways to do that is by putting the tooth back in its socket. It should slide back into place easily. If it doesn’t, don’t force it. Instead, place the tooth in a clean container filled with milk.
Step #4: Get the Care You Need
The last step is perhaps the most important: get to your dentist’s office ASAP! That way, they have the highest chance of being able to save your tooth. Of course, if something unforeseen happens, like the tooth gets badly damaged while being transported, don’t worry – they can fill the new gap in your smile with the next best thing: a dental bridge or implant.
