Don’t Panic: What to Do If You Lose a Dental Crown

Losing a dental crown can be an unsettling experience, especially if it happens unexpectedly while you’re eating or brushing your teeth. Whether it comes off completely or feels loose, it’s important not to panic. Dental crowns are designed to protect weakened or damaged teeth, so addressing the situation quickly can help prevent discomfort or further damage. Here’s what to do if you lose a dental crown and how to handle the situation until you can see your dentist.

Find and Save the Crown

The first thing you should do is locate the crown if it has fallen out. Carefully rinse it with warm water to remove any debris, but be gentle—don’t scrub or use harsh cleaners. Store the crown in a small, clean container or a plastic bag to bring with you to your dental appointment.

In some cases, your dentist may be able to re-cement the original crown if it’s still in good condition. Saving it could save you time and money compared to getting a new one made.

Check the Tooth and Crown for Damage

Before doing anything else, take a close look at your exposed tooth and the inside of the crown. If the tooth looks jagged, sharp, or painful, avoid touching it and do not try to force the crown back on. If there’s visible decay or part of the tooth has broken off, you’ll need professional repair before the crown can be replaced.

You may feel some sensitivity because the tooth beneath the crown is exposed. This is normal and usually temporary, but it’s a sign that you should see your dentist as soon as possible.

Protect the Exposed Tooth

If your crown has come off and you can’t get to the dentist immediately, it’s important to protect the exposed tooth from damage and sensitivity. Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth and stay away from sticky, hard, or crunchy foods that could irritate or harm the area.

You can also pick up temporary dental cement or dental wax (available at most pharmacies) to cover the exposed tooth or temporarily reattach the crown. Follow the instructions carefully, and remember—this is just a short-term fix until your dentist can properly restore it.

Manage Sensitivity or Discomfort

It’s not uncommon to experience mild sensitivity to temperature or pressure when a crown comes off. To ease discomfort, you can:

  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed.
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water to keep the area clean.
  • Avoid very hot, cold, or sugary foods and drinks.

If you experience severe pain, swelling, or bleeding, contact your dentist immediately. These could be signs of infection or a more serious underlying issue.

Schedule an Appointment Promptly

Even if you’re not in pain, don’t delay seeing your dentist. The longer the tooth remains unprotected, the higher the risk of damage or decay. Your dentist will evaluate whether the crown can be reattached or if a new one is needed.

Losing a dental crown isn’t a dental emergency in most cases, but it does require prompt attention. Acting quickly—by saving the crown, protecting the tooth, and scheduling a dental visit—can prevent complications and make repair easier. With professional care, your smile will be fully restored in no time, and your crown will be securely back where it belongs.
